Why I am Not a Buddhist

WHY I AM NOT A BUDDHIST
by Molly Peacock

I love desire, the state of want and thought
of how to get; building a kingdom in a soul
requires desire. I love the things I’ve sought-
you in your beltless bathrobe, tongues of cash that loll
from my billfold- and love what I want: clothes,
houses, redemption. Can a new mauve suit
equal God? Oh no, desire is ranked. To lose
a loved pen is not like losing faith. Acute
desire for nut gateau is driven out by death,
but the cake on its plate has meaning,
even when love is endangered and nothing matters.
For my mother, health; for my sister, bereft,
wholeness. But why is desire suffering?
Because want leaves a world in tatters?
How else but in tatters should a world be?
A columned porch set high above a lake.
Here, take my money. A loved face in agony,
the spirit gone. Here, use my rags of love.

"The Bait of Christian Fundamentalism in Africa"

My good friend Michael Mungai just posted to Huffington Post blogs:

Want to be popular? Leave the country.

I've noticed that you can get a feel for how society, at least within your circle of friends, is operating, by the amount of Facebook "likes" given proportional to topic. And I can tell you, NOTHING garners "likes" like leaving the country. I posted that I will be in Kenya for a few weeks, flying out today, and I'm up to 15+ likes in no time. People love when you get away from them, apparently?

Such a Lush

They say it's like a candy store for women... all those pretty looking soaps and bubble bath "bombs"? Yepp... it really is.

Death and the Rich and the Famous

"Dying is the only thing that guarantees a rock star has a legacy that stretches beyond temporary relevance. Somewhere, at some point, somehow, somebody decided that death equals credibility. I want to figure out why that is. I want to find out why the greatest career move any musician can make is to stop breathing." - Chuck Klosterman

Klosterman was right, long before the news about Winehouse's death broke shortly after news of a massacre in Norway. The problem is, for many people, Winehouse consumed the spotlight in the public arena. One woman suffering from substance abuse over nearly 100 innocent people murdered. But, I suppose, there was art involved in Winehouse's death, which makes the death itself seem like the final act, the final brushstroke, in the artistic creation of her life. It makes her song "Rehab" all the more poignant. I suppose we are all slaves to the magnitude and mystery of death, so anyone who has experienced it inevitably becomes infinitely and intractably more fascinating.
